It was great to see so many people at the Fairhope show.
I always enjoy visiting with all of you who have bought my work in the past. I prefer selling my work directly to you so you can know why I created a painting and at the same time I get to know where the painting will take up residence!

Getting ready for the ESAC Outdoor Art Show in downtown Fairhope, March 16-18

This painting has been rolling around in my head ever since I took the photo a few years ago.

The next painting is a new technique for me. It took me a while to work out how I was going to do this. The idea started with a painting I saw at a bistro in Paris. The painting I saw had a white gesso ground and the edges were left raw with the tacks showing. I am using a raw rough linen and priming  it (sizing, not gesso) so that I could leave some of the linen color showing. I have to credit using this linen to an artist friend Davis Tomasovsky of Ocean Springs/New Orleans. The painting shown here is wrapped but I have done several so that the copper tacks are left showing on the side and the edges are left raw.  A bit labor intensive and more costly too!I like the look. I hope others will too.

Glacier National Park Paintings

Had a wonderful hiking trip to Glacier National Park in September.
Our first day we experienced the first snow of the season and then it warmed to upper 70's during the day and 50's at night with big beautiful blue skies for the remainder of our stay.
I have had time to do two paintings so far, but I have a treasure of photos and memories to last for a lifetime of painting.

We hiked to this location and had lunch along the shore.

New work and upcoming shows

I attended a workshop this spring to study with a favorite artist of mine, Guido Frick. Guido creates beautiful still life and landscape paintings. It was the second workshop of his I have attended.
His classes, in conjunction with last year's Alabama Art Colony instructor Qiang Huang, inspired me to focus on still life paintings.
I hope you enjoy the one I posted. I will have some more posted on my website soon!

I decided to paint a series of restaurant scenes for my next outdoor art show in Fairhope this March.
I have not used Payne's Grey on my palette for several months and decided to play with it again.
I painted this yesterday from a photo I took in December while having lunch at a
restaurant in the Ferry Building in San Francisco.

Bay Rivers Art Guild 2011 Juried Show

I entered three paintings in BRAG's  show and all three were accepted! Here is one of them.
I painted this scene from a photo I took last September while on a hiking adventure in Yosemite.
As many of you know, I have a story for every painting.
Early one morning we were driving through the valley to get to our trailhead for that day. In a very wooded section where nothing but big tree trunks were in view, I asked Taylor to pull over to the side of the road. I grabbed my camera and walked down to find the bank of the Merced River. I am not sure why I even asked Taylor to stop, I just had a feeling. When I found the shore line I looked up to find this incredible view of El Capitan!

More Paintings through Outreach

This painting is from a photo I took several years ago while on a sailing trip to Anquilla from St. Martin. It was a picture perfect day. I saw a photo on Yahoo! this morning of a famous basketball star riding a bike while vacationing on the island. This painting was placed today at Sunflower Cafe in Fairhope along with other tropics inspired paintings.

This is a palette knife painting of the Mobile Delta. I did this painting several years ago and have not done much palette work lately.  Let me know what you think.
I placed it today at Thomas Hospital in Daphne through
Bay Rivers Art Guild Outreach.

Paintings available through Eastern Shore Art Association, Fairhope, AL

Through the Eastern Shore Art Association, I have placed seven of my restaurant scenes for sale at Tamara's Downtown in Fairhope, AL This is one of them. The scene is from a restaurant in California.
I hope to soon take some photos at Tamara's! People have asked me if any of my restaurant scenes are local and I have to admit that I do not usually have my camera with me when I dine out locally-But I will work on that! Hope to go to Tamara's soon for her great food and great atmosphere!

Getting Ready for a cold snap

Taylor and I recently returned from a trip to San Francisco and Healdsburg, CA and as usual had a wonderful wining and dining experience. Today, I am working on photos I took at restaurants and wineries so I can begin some new restaurant scene paintings.
But first, here is a little painting from yesterday.
Having a cup of tea before going out to pick the last of my satsumas.
Expecting a hard freeze tonight.

Today I started sending out postcards announcing my blog.
Is anyone out there?
Since my website is under reconstruction, I decided to post some extra paintings here. Let me know if anyone is interested in viewing more paintings from a particular series.

November Birthday, Oil, 12 x 16inches
©Colette Martin Waite
I painted this today on the occasion of my Mother's birthday.
My Dad brought the cloisonne vase home from Japan years ago and Mom gave it to me for Christmas last year. One of her favorite childhood memories is the satsumas she and her siblings would receive in their Christmas stockings! So I set this up with a satsuma reflecting in the vase.

While I have the satsumas I am making the best of them.
Also a good excuse to paint orange & blue.

I have been busy setting up this blog and working with my digital images so that this blog can be up and running fast. I hope my work makes you smile when you see it. I have found one of the best reasons to participate in outdoor art shows is to see the reaction of the public to my work. I am so grateful to everyone who walks in to my booth and breaks into a big smile. However, my favorite response is when something catches a young child's eye and they pull their parents in to see.
That's why I'm here-to borrow a phrase from James Taylor!

Shrimp, Oil, 10 x 10 inches

While visiting New Orleans a few months back, Taylor and I wandered down to see the artists on the Square and have lunch at Muriel's or maybe it was after Sunday Brunch at Royal Sonesta-anyway-I was inspired me to paint these little shrimp paintings when I got back home. A few of them are for sale in Mobile at Tanner's Pecans in Springhill.
